The Gathering Milwaukee

The Gathering is a great non-profit. Hands down one of the best I have been fortunate enough to visit! They are one of the easiest volunteering opportunities on this website. All you have to do is walk though the doors as there is no need to schedule ahead of time. Just show up ready to serve up some delicious food!

I chose the morning shift and arrived at 7 am. I walked through the front door of the building located at 1300 W. Fond du lac ave. and I was greeted by another volunteer. I asked to speak with the volunteer coordinator, Natalee, and as I was speaking Natalee appeared. She was happy to have me there and right away she got me set up with some gloves and an apron. Fortunately, I was wearing a beanie so I did not have to wear a hair-net (Bring your own hat if you do not want to where a hair-net!).

First I helped out in the kitchen with Danielle; who is there almost everyday even though she works at other jobs also. She was happy to put me to work. We whipped up some biscuits and gravy in no time…. Danielle did most of the work, but I was there for moral support!

Then it was time to serve. Before serving, Natalee held a quick meeting to introduce all the volunteers and give everyone a breakdown on The Gathering and what it stands for. I was then given a serving position. I was serving peaches and green beans! It was easy and fun. Then after an hour it was time to clean up. Just like that, we were done and had served just under 100 guests! Amazing!

It was an awesome experience. One of the other volunteers even offered to give me a ride back to the hotel. I highly recommend giving The Gathering a visit on your next Milwaukee overnight.

What makes The Gathering so amazing is that they open their doors to whoever is hungry. Anyone that walks through the door is more than welcome. It can be difficult to create a happy and judgement-free environment like this one— but it seems The Gathering has done it with ease.
